If your furnace is only 3 or 4 years old, a yearly tune-up can feel like paying someone to check on something that’s obviously fine.
It’s a fair question, and the honest answer has less to do with how your furnace is running than with the warranty paperwork sitting in a kitchen drawer somewhere.
Read the warranty
Many furnace manufacturers make their parts warranty conditional on annual professional maintenance, and they can ask for proof when you file a claim. A heat exchanger or control board on a newer high-efficiency furnace is an expensive part, and missing maintenance records can become a reason a claim gets denied.
Terms vary quite a bit from one manufacturer to the next. If you’re not sure what yours says, we’re happy to look at it with you.
Newer furnaces have more to check
A modern high-efficiency furnace has a lot more going on inside than the one it replaced. There’s a control board running the whole show, often a variable-speed blower, a second heat exchanger, PVC venting, and a condensate drain with its own trap.
That drain is the classic example. It slowly clogs with a sort of sludge, water backs up, a sensor trips, and the furnace shuts itself down. Nothing about it looks or sounds different from the outside until the heat stops.
Milwaukee asks a lot of a furnace
A furnace here runs hard for 6 months or more a year. That’s a lot of hours to put on any piece of equipment, however new, without anybody opening it up to look.
